She is also survived by her dear niece Rhonda Wachs, who was especially loving and attentive in the final months of her life. ZWICK HOLLAND, BONNIE


Bonnie Zwick Holland of Delray Beach, Fla., beloved mother of Lindsay Holland of Delray Beach, Fla., and Greer (Timothy) Vaillancourt of Worcester, Mass.; grandmother of Malachi and Josiah; sister of Gloria (Charles) Cuthbert, Caryn, Donna, Bruce (Ilene) and Michael (Lisa) Zwick; aunt of 15; cousin of many; daughter of the late Marguerite and Joseph Zwick, died March 5 after a long struggle with Crohn’s Disease. She was 58. Bonnie was known to fill the room with her strength, beauty and artistic nature. A true believer in all dreams and always there with encouraging words and tender hugs, she will always be held close to our hearts as a loving mother, daughter, sister and friend. A memorial service will be held at Beachwood Hilton Sun., March 28, at 11 a.m.

Martin Evans, husband of Christiane (née Tergoule) and formerly of the late Rita (née Barnett); father of Robin Grislain of Blanquefort, France, Bruce (Nancy) of Boston, and Dr. Jonathan (Evelyne) of Jacksonville, Fla.; grandfather of seven; great-grandfather of two; son of the late Lillian and Isaac; brother of Donald and the late William, Dr. Robert and Charles, died March 8 in Sarasota, Fla. He was 86. Mr. Evans, a resident of Shaker Heights; Chardon; Brussels; and Camden, Maine, was a 1941 graduate of Shaker Heights High School and a 1948 graduate of Cornell University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-45.

Lois Jean Friedman (née Jacobson), wife of more than 56 years to Allan; mother of Jody (Jonathan) Weiss, Shelley (Tania) and Darrell (Chris); grandmother of Danielle, Jack, Julia, Kevin, Kimberly, Noa, Nathan, Emma and Elie; sister of Mimi Isaacs and Marc Jacobson, died March 4 in Thousand Oaks, Calif., at age 78, with her family giving her love and comfort to her last breath. Born and raised in a large family in Shaker Heights, Mrs. Friedman maintained strong, loving ties to her family and childhood friends throughout her life. Above all else, she was profoundly joyful being with her husband, children and grandchildren, whether she was sharing a global travel adventure or an ice cream cone. Eleanor Rosenfield, advocate for deaf and hearing impaired, was 57


Dr. Eleanor “Ellie” Diane Rosenfield, associate dean for student and academic services at Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID), died March 7 after a two-year battle with lymphoma. She was 57.

Marvin Resnik, father of Challenger astronaut Judith Resnik, was 90


Dr. Marvin Resnik, an optometrist and avid golfer, died March 3 at age 90. He was in the national spotlight after his daughter Dr. Judith A. Resnik, the first American Jewish woman in space, was killed in the Challenger explosion on Jan. 28, 1986.

GILBERT GROSS


Gilbert Louis Gross, M.D., who led the anesthesia department at Deaconess Hospital where he practiced for 25 years, died March 8 at age 87. Dr. Gross worked in private practice when he moved to Cleveland in the early 1950s before moving to Lakeside Hospital (now part of UH and Case Western Reserve University), attaining assistant professor status after two years.

ESTELLE ZIDE


Estelle Zide (née Cole), an administrator and bookkeeper for the family business, died March 5 at age 79. Mrs. Zide, a member of B’nai Jeshurun Congregation, ORT, B’nai B’rith and MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), volunteered at Menorah Park Center for Senior Living. She was an avid reader and traveler.

HAROLD JONES


Harold Raymond Jones, one of Cleveland’s scrap metal dealers, died March 7 in Delray Beach, Fla. He was 82. Mr. Jones was the president of the Globe Metal Company, where he worked with his brother Marvin throughout the 1950s and ’60s. In the 1970s, he founded Harold Metallics and later JEM Metals. He was involved in numerous other businesses, including real estate development, a rental car agency, and a restaurant/nightclub in Youngstown.

Fred Gold, a driving force in his family’s business The Schvitz, died Feb. 26 at age 80. The Schvitz men’s steam bath, located at 116th St. and Kinsman since 1927, is a Cleveland institution. It was originally operated by four generations of Mr. Gold’s family and was featured in the CJN in the Feb. 2002 article “Sweatin’ with the oldies” (http://tinyurl.com/yfq96mk).

(the late Laura), and Ilona; loving grandfather of Rachel, Adam, Shayna, Elana and Leah, died March 8 at age 87. Photographer and artist Martin L. Linsey was 94

Martin Louis Linsey, who worked in the education department at The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) for 20 years, died March 3 at age 94. He worked at a variety of jobs in photography and industrial design and for the architectural firm of Dalton and Dalton as a delineator and model-maker before joining CMA in 1960.

HARRISON FUERST

Harrison M. Fuerst, an attorney and broadcaster, died March 6, two weeks before his 85th birthday. In 1964, Mr. Fuerst put together a group to purchase WADC radio station in Akron They changed the call letters to WSLR and the format to country music. WSLR became the first country music station north of the Mason-Dixon Line. Mr. Fuerst also owned radio stations in Denver; Omaha; Albany; Mansfield; and Rutland, Vt. As a lawyer, he handled one of the first asbestosis cases, obtaining a settlement for a railroad worker who suffered lung damage as a result of exposure to asbestos fibers.

Holocaust survivor Alice Fixler (née Fogel), beloved wife of Simon; devoted mother of Dennis (Gayle) of Maryland, James and Mark (Sherry); loving grandmother of Jordan, Hayley and Michael, died March 6 at age 87. Services will be held at Berkowitz-Kumin-Bookatz Memorial Chapel, Mon., March 8 at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends at the Fixler residence, 1828 Edenhall Dr., Lyndhurst, Monday following interment and Tuesday through Thurs., March 11, 1-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. only. Sylvan Rosenfield, who headed the plastics division of Ethyl Corporation, died March 2 in Cape Coral, Fla. He was 89. A graduate of Carnegie Institute of Technology, where he earned a degree in engineering, Mr. Rosenfield also had a long career with Nymold Corporation.

Joan “Nina” Spero Kotler, beloved wife of the late Samuel; devoted mother of Caryn Kotler Duboff (Howard Orzan) and Marti (Frank) Reich; loving grandmother and “Nina” to Mallie and Kori Duboff, Stacee, Alyssa and Jake Reich; best friend and dear sister of the late Jane Bubis and Loren Spero; “Aunt Joan” to her many nieces and nephews; beloved friend and sister-in-law; daughter of the late Yetta and Martin Spero, died March 1. She was born in Cleveland on June 30, 1930. Joan will be greatly missed and remembered all over Miami Beach. Harriet Schenker (née Fried), former executive director of administration for the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland (GIC), died Feb. 18 at age 89. She worked for the organization for 20 years.

STRAUSS

The family of the late Max A. Strauss, husband of Lillian (née Rubinstein); father of Esther (Rabbi Shimon) Gutman, Freidel (Gershon) Carmen, Rachel (Naftoli) Straus, Isi (Rochel), and the late Malka Devora (Simcha); grandfather and great-grandfather; brother of the late Hilde Steinharter, will dedicate a monument Sun., March 7, at noon in Zion Memorial Park (Young Israel Sec.). KATERINA DEUTSCH

Holocaust survivor Katerina Deutsch (née Stern), a seamstress, died Feb. 13. She was 100. Mrs. Deutsch, a member of Kehillat Yaacov/Cedar Road Synagogue, enjoyed sewing and gardening.

ANNETTE KAPLAN

Annette W. Kaplan (née Wald), who worked at Cleveland Heights High School, died Feb. 20 at age 86. Mrs. Kaplan, a graduate of Glenville High School, had also worked for the U.S. Navy office.

LAWRENCE PEIZER

Lawrence Peizer, a past president of B’nai Brith and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), died Feb. 10 at age 78. Mr. Peizer, a member of Oheb Zeek-Taylor Road Synagogue and a past member of Young Israel of Greater Cleveland, was active in many Jewish organizations, but he focused on fighting discrimination.

WILLIAM SHULMAN

William Shulman, who managed Nottingham Auto Wrecking Co., died Feb. 27 at age 98. He was one of the principles of Trio Auto Parts for 20 years and the president of Bellaire Road Auto Parts for 40 years.

MILDRED HENKIN

Mildred Henkin (née Washor), a volunteer at the former St. Joseph Hospital, died March 2 in Woodland Hills, Calif. She was 91. Mrs. Henkin was a native of Brooklyn, N.Y. In 1954, she moved to Lorain, where she was a member of Agudath B’nai Israel Synagogue and a life member of Hadassah. With her husband, she was actively involved in the Boy Scouts.
